FIX E.I. FIGHT CONTINUES
After two more successful town hall meetings in Scarborough and Brampton, and a rousing demonstration at the Dufferin Mall, the Good Jobs for All coalition is planning an intensive lobby of Members of Parliament to ask for their support to fix E.I. Another rally is planned after Easter at the Government of Canada building at 4900 Yonge St.
In Vaughan, the City’s Mayor and Councillors unanimously endorsed a motion asking the federal government to change the EI system so that everyone could qualify after 360 hours of work, benefits increase to 60% of the best twelve weeks of earnings, and duration be extended to 50 weeks plus during the economic downturn. The resolution that will go to the formal City Council meeting soon also includes waiving the two week waiting period and severance pay.
