Ask your MPP for a Long-Term Affordable Housing Strategy that works!

April 28, 2010
Family Service Toronto and Ontario Campaign 2000 are members of the Housing Network of Ontario - a provincial network of affordable housing advocates with over 450 organizations and individuals who have endorsed the Housing Network of Ontario Declaration.
Please take 2 minutes on Friday April 30th to email or call your MPP to reinforce the message that Ontarians need a Long-Term Affordable Housing Strategy that will effectively reduce and eliminate housing-related poverty.
Say you expect bold action to address our housing crisis. We need:
- Annual funding to build 10,000 affordable homes a year and for ongoing maintenance;
- A new Housing Benefit to close the gap between high rents and low-incomes;
- A plan that works for marginalized communities;
- Legislative changes to better protect tenants and to promote affordable housing;
- Accountability from government to meet their promises.

The facts:
- 1 in every 5 tenant households in Ontario pays more than 50% of their income on rent.
- Last year there were over 129,000 households on the waiting list for affordable housing in Ontario (with wait times of 5 to 20 years)
- The Ontario gov’t has promised to release a Long Term Affordable Housing Strategy in June
On April 29, 2010, the Housing Network of Ontario released at Queens Park the list of “5 Tests for Success” for a new Housing Strategy:
- sustained funding to build at least 10,000 affordable new homes annually and ensure maintenance of all public housing
- a new Housing Benefit and support services to make housing truly affordable and accessible
- changes to housing legislation
- proper accountability, and
- clear ways to measure progress in the fight against housing-related poverty.
We need YOU to support our call for a Long Term Affordable Housing Strategy that works!
Thank you!
