Families in Transition (FIT)
Specialized services for separating, divorcing and remarrying families
We provide:
- COPING WITH LIFE - 6 week therapeutic groups for families; children 4-16 attend groups on Saturdays with other children of a similar age; concurrent evening groups for parents (Note: former partners attend separate groups)
- Support groups for non-residential fathers, non-residential mothers, and parenting skills in the context of separation and divorce
- Individual and family counselling related to reducing parent conflict, creating coparenting relationships, supporting a child’s grief process, and fostering child-parent relationships
- Closed mediation of parenting plans
- Single session educational seminars covering a range of topics related to child adjustment and parental separation. divorce, and remarriage
- 4 week group for couples dealing with remarriage and stepparenting issues.
FIT programs focus on practical strategies for coping with the challenges children and parents face in their day-to-day lives when parents no longer live together.
In addition to our programs for children and parents, FIT staff:
- Conduct research related to child outcomes when parents separate and divorce
- Advocate about social justice initiatives related to separation, divorce, and remarriage
- Provide consultation and training for organizations and professionals working with changing families.
