Margaret Hancock, Executive Director

A social justice advocate with 30 years' progressive experience in community development and community-based education, Margaret has joined Family Service Toronto in July 2007. For ten years, Margaret was the Warden of the University of Toronto's Hart House. During her tenure, she restructured parts of the organization, encouraged innovation, risk-taking and learning, mounted a $12 million capital campaign, and strengthened relationships with stakeholders.

Prior to Hart House, Margaret served as Executive Director of Toronto's Choice in Health Reproductive Health Services. For six years ending in 1993, she served as Ontario Regional Coordinator and then Education Program Coordinator for OXFAM Canada where she gained experience with international development issues in the Americas, South Africa and the Horn of Africa.

Highlights from her earlier work include advocating for the abolishment of capital punishment in Canada and for new alternatives to jails in the justice system, and developing programs that supported individuals and organizations to build networks around peace, justice and social change.

A dedicated volunteer, Margaret also served as Co-Chair of the board of directors of Sistering, Chair of the Metro Network for Social Justice and board President of the Social Planning Council of Metropolitan Toronto.
