“I started to doubt whether I could carry this load.”
My sister Joy has a wonderful laugh and a rich, intuitive experience of living. Joy also has an intellectual disability, bipolar disorder and a couple of invisible but debilitating physical disabilities. One evening I received a telephone call. Her marriage had become abusive, she was in danger. I drove over 1,000 km to get her and a handful of her belongings.
So began four years of living under the same roof. Joy brought a sense of magic to my home but my own life, relationships and interests were eclipsed by her needs. Both of our lives were uprooted. I became chronically exhausted and started to doubt whether I could continue to carry this load. I am certain that I couldn't have, had it not been for the support of Family Service Toronto.
Joy's counsellor recognizes and fosters her strengths and unique gifts, rather than focusing on her limitations. She understands what is happening in Joy's life. One of Joy's biggest dreams was to go out into the world again, as an independent person. FST has helped make this happen, assisting her in finding an apartment and providing ongoing support to her so that she can live on her own. Thank you, FST.
