Family Service Toronto (FST) helps people face a wide variety of life challenges. For over 90 years we have been assisting families and individuals through counselling, community development, advocacy and public education programs. Through the provision of community-based, educational workshops, the training of peer leaders, the creation of peer support networks and the development of a community-based consultation team, this three-year project, aims to strengthen the capacity of two communities to address the issue of elder abuse and support seniors who are experiencing violence in their homes.
Reporting to the Manager, Senior and Caregiver Support Services, each Coordinator will be responsible for the coordination of one of two project communities, either the Somali (Somali-speaking) or the Hispanic (Spanish-speaking) community.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participate in community outreach and program development
- Recruit members of the Steering Committee
- Ensure meetings with the Steering Committee members are held on a regular basis as well as coordinate and provide administrative support to the Steering Committee
- Responsible for the recruitment of peer leaders and workshop participants for the project
- Facilitate training and knowledge exchange sessions for Peer Leaders, Steering Committee members, social service workers, members of the public and seniors
- Provide mentorship, support and information to peer leaders
- Act as a support and resource to regular, ongoing peer support groups
- Work closely and strengthen relationships with community and project partners
- Develop curriculum for educational workshops for seniors and facilitate workshops
- Ensure that workshop materials are developed and translated into the appropriate languages and the workshops have the necessary supplies
- Ensure the necessary speakers and trainers are hired for the training sessions and workshops
- Provide information, educational materials and referrals to community members and participants involved
- Ensure the regular and timely recording of data as required by the funder(s) and as part of FST policy
- Develop, coordinate and evaluate all project activities to achieve project deliverables and ensure that evaluations are completed and a final report is written
- Under the direction of the Project Manager, monitor budget and participate in preparing all required reports
- Participate as a member of FST’s Senior and Caregiver Support Services team
- Provide supervision to students and work with volunteers
QUALIFICATIONS:
- M.S.W. or equivalent combination of education and experience over a minimum of three years (foreign credentials and relevant experience will be considered)
- 3-5 years of experience in working with immigrant communities
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity and inclusion
- Demonstrated project coordination experience with good interpersonal skills, initiative and a collaborative approach
- A good understanding of issues related to elder abuse, especially within the context of one of the project communities
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in working with elders who are victims of violence
- Good communication skills (listening, written and verbal) in both English and Spanish or Somali, two of the project community’s languages
- Strong presentation and facilitation skills as well as knowledge and skills in workshop design and program evaluation
- Experience in working with issues of access and knowledge of strategies for overcoming barriers
- Lived experience within either the Somali or Hispanic community
- Computer literacy and experience with electronic networking
- Experience working with students and/or volunteers is an asset
SALARY RANGE: Salary Grade 8 Bargaining Unit (pending review); $51,580 - $63,530 (pro-rated to time worked)
WORK SCHEDULE: 24 hours per week. Flexibility in scheduling hours of work may be required to meet project needs.
