Volunteering at FST

Volunteering has a long history at Family Service Toronto. In 1914 FST was founded by a group of volunteers who created the Neighbourhood Workers Association to address the growing levels of poverty faced by many families in the city during that era. Since then, volunteering at FST has grown with more than 338 volunteers last year, representing 9,178 volunteer hours. Volunteering at FST continues to be a vital asset to this organization.

Volunteers are involved in almost every facet of work at FST. Some of the roles include: direct service providers for clients, such as children’s group assistants; LGBTQ community counsellors; lawyers; photographers; event organizers and participants; fundraisers; and, administrative support. Our Board of Directors and Community Advisory Councils are also made up entirely of volunteers.

FST works hard to ensure that volunteers’ experiences are positive and that the high standards for which we are known are met. Our practices are guided by the values, principles and standards in the Canadian Code for Volunteer Involvement, as well as feedback from volunteers which provides a solid framework for involving volunteers in our organization. FST volunteers are recognized every year at our Annual General Meeting which provides an opportunity to celebrate our volunteers’ achievements, and applaud their dedication and commitment to FST. Hurray for our volunteers!
