Counselling is effective - new research just released

FST is known for excellent counselling. New data shows that counselling services delivered by Family Service agencies in Ontario were found to be twice as effective as the average treatment for common mental health problems. With professional counselling, people are able to improve their functioning so they can find a keep a job, build self-esteem and improve family relationships. Ultimately, counselling saves money in health, social services and justice systems.

FST offers solution-focused, client-centred counselling for specific issues. In our community programs, we have many more people waiting for service than we can accommodate. We are exploring ways to use technology such as e-counselling to relieve the pressure of wait lists.

Most common issues for which people seek counselling at FST:

  • Abuse (Physical, emotional, sexual) 38%
  • Adult Relationship Issues 21%
  • Family Separation Adjustment 19%
  • Anxiety, Depression, Stress 15%
  • Parenting Issues 7%

We also offer excellence in counselling through our Family Services Employee Assistance Program:

Today’s workplace is different.

  • More than eight in ten of workers agree that the work environment is becoming increasingly stressful.
  • One in three Canadian workers say that they have difficulty maintaining a balance between work and a personal life.
  • Two in ten of Canadians are “always connected” electronically to their work.
  • Four in ten workers say that workplace stress has made them physically ill at some point in their lives.
  • One in ten Canadians will experience depression at some point in their life. Depression strikes men and women
in their prime work years and chronic workplace stress
    increases the risk.

Today’s workplace needs a different kind of EAP. Our counselling service achieves outcomes three times more effectively than other large EAP providers. FSEAP has been recognized with the Employee Assistance Society of North America Award of Excellence – for the fourth year in a row! FSEAP was the first EAP provider in Canada and we are Canada’s only community-based EAP. Proceeds from EAP and workplace consulting support community programs.

In 2008/09 FSEAP served 22,316 people
